Philippines Completes Investment Grade Status from the “Big Three”

Philippines Completes Investment Grade Status from the “Big Three”
What Does Investment Upgrade Mean to Filipinos?

Fitch was the first to upgrade the Philippines in March, with S&P following two months after. Yesterday, the Philippines won a rating upgrade from Moody’s Investors Service, completing our nation’s rise to investment rank.

What was once called “the sick man of Asia” is now one of the best performers. But a common sentiment we hear from Filipinos is this: “Wala namang pagbabago. Mga mayayaman lang ang makikinabang dyan.” and so on.

Did I Make The Right Stock Market Decision?

Did I Make The Right Stock Market Decision?

A lot of “long-term investors” who sold their shares when the market was down due to several factors have asked me this question, “Did I make the right decision?”

STICK TO YOUR INVESTMENT STRATEGY

In contrast, when the stock market was setting record-highs earlier this year, everybody seemed to be stock market experts — not thinking twice about their decisions.

Now, regardless of the market situation, every decision should be made with prudent judgment. A lot of “long-term investors” found themselves confused whether to sell and cut losses or to buy and take advantage of the low prices.

The SM Situation

Remember what happened in SM Mall of Asia last September 16? A part of its ceiling collapsed and an 11-year old boy got injured. [Read more…]

Want to Save Money? Go on a Diet!

Saving is like a diet
Learn the Strategies which Applies in both Successful Saving & Dieting

“I will start my healthy diet TOMORROW.” Sounds familiar? You either heard this from a friend, a family member, or from yourself. Days, weeks, months, and even years pass – still the same tomorrow na lang excuse.

And when it comes to saving and investing, it sounds like this “On the next pay-day” and many other variations like “After (insert occasion here: Birthday, Holiday, etc).”

Saving is like a diet

Do you want to know why this keeps on happening? Like what I mentioned in my blog, The Social Cost of Investing, we Filipinos are very social people and love doing things together. That is why we celebrate as many holidays, and occasions as possible (including the fiestas in all 7,107 islands in the Philippines, kidding!) Indeed, it’s more fun eating here! Consequently, dieting gets delayed until the next occasion comes along. :)

Kung kalaban ng diet ang fiesta, when it comes to saving, may fiesta din. This time it is located in malls and call it a 3-day SALE. Take a look at this scenario and see if you can relate. [Read more…]

Aya’s Dubai Adventure

Aya's Dubai Blog

Three weeks ago marked a milestone for us in PESOS AND SENSE. Last July 5, I conducted our very first International seminar in Dubai. Did you know that over 20% of Dubai’s population are Filipinos? That was why I was very excited — knowing that I would get to meet some of them and share what I have learned over the years.

Helping OFWs is one of the main reasons why we created PESOS AND SENSE. We even have an episode dedicated to our modern-day heroes, because I know that teaching them how to manage their money wisely and how to invest will reunite them with their families sooner.

How to Claim an Insurance Policy

How to claim an insurance policy

The purpose of a life insurance policy is to protect your family and your other assets when you are gone.

Now, we’re sure that you have heard some insurance horror stories wherein the beneficiaries weren’t able to claim the money from the insurance company due to many reasons like unfinished payment, elapsed claiming time, lost receipt or certificate of full payment, incomplete requirements, or a policy that the family wasn’t even aware of at all!

Insurance Claim Form

Instead of comfort, these are added stress to the beneficiary. Bear in mind that it is not the insurance company’s responsibility to inform your beneficiary about their benefits when you die, that is yours! (While you’re still alive, that is.)

Here are some tips so that claiming would be easier for your family: [Read more…]

Warning: Investment Tips on Facebook

Warning: Investment tips on facebook

I need to send out a warning for everyone to be careful.

I have been observing that more and more people are already asking questions and acting on tips from total strangers. Sadly, those people may have the best of intentions but they DO NOT KNOW YOU, your objectives, your resources, and your risk appetite.

Facebook Tips Warning

Just the other day, I saw a post on a Facebook group telling that he followed the advice of selling his stocks at a LOSS because the stock market has entered the bear market. If you are a long-term investor, why do that? Shouldn’t you be happy and buy more shares [Read more…]

What is a Good Investment?

What is a good investment

It seems like everywhere I go, a favorite question people ask me is “Aya, what is a good investment?”

At the end of this blog, I hope that you will be convinced that you should never ask this question again. Why? because it’s the wrong question to ask.

A lot of people need it. Magandang gamot lang naman ang hiningi mo diba?

Investments

Investing is the same thing. There are so many investments available. Each one has their own strengths and weakness, how will you choose which one is for you? As I have learned, there is no ONE super investment that will answer everything. There is only a particularly suited investment [Read more…]
